Monty McElligott
The recent passing of Crotta hurling stalwart, Monty McElligott, evokes
fond memories of the great championship-winning teams of the nineteen
forties and early nineteen fifties. in a golden era for Crotta hurling, Monty
starred in three winning finals, 1947, 1950 and 1951.
Monty continued his playing career all through the fifties, and
later gave outstanding service for many years as chairman of the club.
having retired from the playing field, Monty and his wife, Moira, settled
at Crotta Cross, a short distance from the famous Crotta Great House,
to rear their family.
Joseph, the only boy in the family, continued the Mcelligott hurling
tradition, and for many years starred at half-back for club and county.
The three girls, mairead, Kathleen Anne and Sheila all married into
staunch GAA families, and they too continue the great love affair
with our national games.
Monty was a gifted tradesman and an outstanding builder, and took
immense pride in the quality and craftsmanship of his work..he was
a neighbour, always willing and available to help with an open door
and a friendly and funny word of advice, if required.
Moira, as well as being a hard-working wife and mother, had a very
successful shop at Crotta cross for many years, and the McElligott
house was a focal point of the community with a genuine and warm
welcome for one and all.
Monty McElligott was a true family man
who believed and shared the values of love and friendship handed
down to us by all our mothers and fathers.
To Moira, and all the family we extend our sincere sympathy.
