NORTH KERRY TITLE FOR CROTTA U13 HURLERS
Crotta U13 hurlers captured the North Kerry U 13 Division 1 title on Friday evening 28th September,
when they recorded a 2-08 to 1-04 victory over our Causeway, in Abbeydorney. Crotta U13 hurlers continued the recent successes of the U11, U12 and U15 teams when they added the North Kerry U13 title to their recent Rose Cup win. Both teams played some great hurling which resulted in a very good game of hurling despite the presence of a strong breeze. The difference between the teams was that Crotta’s forwards seemed to make better use of any possession they got with some great combination play. Barry Mahony pointed a free in the second minute following a foul on himself. Both he and Darragh O’Donoghue ran at the Causeway defence at every opportunity which resulted in frees or creating space for the other forwards. Causeway attached the Crotta goal but found Jeaic McKenna at centre back and the outstanding Brian O’Connell at full back in top form. Aaron Murnane in goals made some great saves during the first half. Causeway equalised from a free in the fifth minute and took a one point lead after a long range point from play. Another pointed free gave Causeway a two point advantage and they could have added to that lead but for some wayward shooting by their forward division. The most important score of that first half was scored on 9 mins and rocked Causeway back on their heels. Barry Mahony battled hard to win a ball at midfield and when it was delivered to the Causeway square the Causeway keeper made a serious of saves. The ball broke out to the left and was prevented from going over the end line by Darragh O’Donoghue. He evaded two challenges before rifling the ball to the roof of the net from the tightest of angles. Sean Murnane pointed from play following a run and pass from Darragh O’Donoghue. When a Causeway free was converted it left the bare minimum between the teams. Crotta’s midfield gained a stranglehold again in that sector shortly before halftime and Barry Mahony pointed two frees following a foul on Barry himself, and also as a result of a late challenge on Adam O’Sullivan. These two scores were vital as it gave Crotta a three point half time lead.

The second half was only four Minutes old when a free after a chop down on the impressive John Quilter, was converted by Barry Mahony. Causeway then scored a goal to leave only a point between the teams. The selectors made a change then, restoring Barry Mahony to the midfield area after he had started the second half at full forward. This though was the last score that Causeway got in the game as Crotta took over in most areas of the pitch. Dominic Nolan put in a great second half and was everywhere picking and clearing any breaking ball. Brian O’Connell was rock like at the back and cleared his lines time and again. The half back trio of Jeaic McKenna in the centre and his two wing backs, James Sheehan and Pairic Shanahan were completely dominant at this stage and supplied plenty of ball to the forwards. Darragh O’Donoghue broke through and when it looked like he should score, the Causeway keeper saved to his left. A move that started with Crotta corner back Padraig Hunt, who pulled on a ground ball and involved some great play by both Barry Mahony and Darragh O’Donoghue ended in the Causeway net following a great strike by Darragh Murnane who had come on at half time as a sub. Adam O’Sullivan (35 Minutes) from play and Barry Mahony (37 Minutes) again from a placed ball put Crotta six points clear. Darragh Behan with a lovely score from the right raised another white flag to leave the full time score Crotta 2-08 Causeway 1-04. Victories Crotta captain Dominic Nolan accepted the Jack and Mike Galvin Memorial Shield from North Kerry Board Coiste na nOg Chairman Mikie Leahy to great applause. How fitting for Dominic to lift the trophy after he was accidentally injured when the two sides met previously in the Championship. Dominic in his acceptance speech thanked the Abbeydorney Club, the referee and the mentors Padraig Cronin, Jerome O’Sullivan, Dominic Nolan Snr and Plunkett McElhatton and Dominic also thanked a very sporting Causeway team for a great game and asked for three cheers. SOCCER
Kilflynn Santos Senior had our first win of the new season on Sunday morning, 7th October, beaten Bayview Rovers on a scoreline of 3-2 at Kerry District League pitch, Tralee. The first half was a dull affair with Kilflynn having most of the ball but never really testing there goalie. Bayview started the better after the break and were two goals up inside 10 minutes of the second half. Kilflynn pulled one back with our half -time sub Tom McKenna heading in from a corner. They now started to dominate and with Kilflynn other super sub Shane Nolan a constant threat , Kilflynn were level when he was pulled down when clear on goals. Tom McKenna scored his second from the resulting penalty. We were now pushing for the winner and we got our deserved rewards when Shane Nolan scored after Niall Enright shot was cleared off the line. Kilflynn should have had two or three more goals in last 10 minutes but wayward shooting and good goalkeeping kept the score 3-2. Team was a follows. Henry Donovan, Gary Curran, J.P McElligott, Jack Twomey, David Cronin, Colin Curran, Byran O Mahoney, Mark Callaghan, Niall Enright, Francis Keane, Richard Nolan. Subs used: Tom McKenna and Shane Nolan. Kilflynn Santos next game is on Monday October 15th, in the Denny Kerry District League Div 2 ‘B’ at 6-30 p.m. against Tralee Athletic at Mounthawk Park, Tralee.

NORTH KERRY U-14 HURLING FINAL
Crotta U14 hurlers played out a thrilling draw in the North Kerry Championship U14 “A” Final on Saturday evening 6th October against Ardfert in Abbeydorney.
A large attendance were on the edge of their seats right till the final whistle as the match flowed from end to end. These two teams when they have met, have always served up exciting fare. Ardfert had the better of the first half and seemed to open the Crotta defence time and again but did not hit the target often enough. As it was they led at half time on a score of Ardfert 1-06 Crotta 0-04. The only goal of the first half was of the soft variety. It started with a quickly taken free, catching the Crotta backs in disarray and finished with a poorly struck shot somehow ending up in the Crotta net. Two long distance Brandon Conway frees plus one each from play by Barry Mahony and Darragh Kennelly was Crotta’s tally in that first half.
Crotta who had started the second half with six of the seven members of their defensive unit(including the Goalkeeper) under 13, set about the task in hand from the throw in. Tomas O’Connor replaced Niall O’Sullivan at half time and he seemed to rally the troupes with Sean O’Donoghue, Colin Browne, Darragh Stack all upping their work rate. The Crotta midfield and half forward line were getting the better of their opponents and this provided a spring board for the rest of the team. With ten Minutes gone Crotta had cut the deficit to the bare minimum. Darragh Kennelly scored his second from play and after Sean O’Donoghue had batted a ball into Darragh Stack, his long puck towards the Ardfert goals was plucked from the air by John Quilter. John coolly finished to the Ardfert net, despite an advancing Ardfert rear guard. A superb Colin Browne point from play tied the scores at 1-06 a piece. Ardfert again regained the lead in the 50th minute following the concession of a needless free by the Crotta backs. In the 53rd minute Sean O’Donoghue won possession and he was fouled. Brandon Conway pointed the free from a long distance and we were level once more. With three minutes left on the clock Ardfert took the lead once more but Crotta never gave up and some clever play by Crotta U12 player Darragh O’Donoghue engineered another free.
Brandon Conway who must have been under pressure, showed great composure in levelling the match. Ardfert, who are the Feile Champions and a much physically stronger team, had two other chances from long range frees to win the game but both dropped short. Crotta defence were superb in the second half with Barry Mahony and Jeaic McKenna outstanding.
At one point it looked like extra time would have to be played but thankfully common sense prevailed. To ask young lads to play twenty minutes extra, and a few after playing soccer at two o’ clock plus the fact that over half the Crotta starting team are U13, is not on. Crotta lined out as follows: Adam O’Sullivan, Barry Mahony, Brian O’Connell, Darragh Behan, Jeaic McKenna, Dylan McElligott, Niall O’Sullivan, Tom Quinlan, Brandon Conway, Sean O’Donoghue, Darragh Kennelly, John Quilter, Darragh Stack, Colin Browne and Dominic Nolan Subs used: Tomas O’Connor for Niall O’Sullivan (half time)Darrgh O’Donoghue for Jeaic McKenna (45mins)
