SENANS U-12 PLAY IN CROKE PARK
St Senans U12 enjoyed a wonderful day out in Croke Park on Tuesday 7th August ensuring the day will leave a lasting impression on this fine bunch of young players.
They were up against three very strong teams in Lisseycasey (Clare), Laune Rangers (Kerry) and Canovee (Cork). They were competitive and committed in all games ensuring they came away with three victories. Laune Rangers in particular were a good barometer being division One opposition in Kerry.
Senans Started well in the first game V Lisseycasey and settled onto the ball quickly. After the initial period where although dominating open play the final pass was missing the team got into their stride. Cillain Trant and Daniel O’Rourke opening up the play again and again and it was fitting that both were first onto the score sheet. The long ball in to Damien Larkin started to pay off and he duly got a good goal keeping with the run of play. After a brief fight back from their Clare opponents staunch defending kept them from scoring a goal themselves Daniel O’Rourke then gained possession and scored the point of the game from just outside the halfway line. Senans kept attacking and were unlucky not to add to their goal tally, but working as a team they would end their first game in complete control. Eamon Rohan and Ryan Murphy again had solid games at the back ensuring the danger was kept to a minimum throughout.
Next up was Laune Rangers and this was a real battle. Rangers started off with two goals after the Senans backs were caught napping. It was the wake up call Senans needed as they fought like tigers for every ball for the remainder of the match. In a game were space was at a premium Senans stepped up to take on their Div 1 opponents showing no respect for the gap in divisions unlike the game we played against Listowel last month. To the Fore in the fight back was the defence with Daniel Hunt and Timmy Dillon charging into every tackle. Denis Quille really upped his work rate and it told as he started to get onto the ball and find the inside forwards. Tomas Dillon really started to trouble the Rangers backs and Orla Dillon was very unlucky not to score. Senans scored some great points and a few goals Pairic Shanahan scoring the best of them after fighting for the ball out on the wing himself. Any hopes of a Rangers comeback were halted when an Aodan Behan Shoulder reminded their Southern opposition of North Kerry football at it’s best.
Last up were Canovee a team that had played Senans off the field in a Listowel Blitz last year. In a sign of just how much this team has grown there was no repeat of that result. The first half was a scrappy affair like a boxing match waiting to see who would strike the killer blow. It was hard to gain possession at Midfield so with a couple of changes Senans started to come in to the game. Aodan McKenna held the backs and Daniel O’Rourke won the next Couple of Kick outs ensuring the ball started to move past the half way line. At Half time fresh legs were introduced and this helped Senans take control of a game where they were behind. Aodan Behan really got stuck in and Denis Quille and Sean Murnane were always looking for the ball, with both Denis and Sean scoring some good points. James Canty also chipped in with 2 good scores. The whole team worked really hard to ensure Senans closed the game out and make it three wins out of three.
So there was plenty of craic on the way home and some great memories of a wonderful day. St Senans U12 Panel – Croke Park: Aodan Behan, Aodhan McKenna Brian Logue, Ciaran Healy,Cillian Trant, Damien Larkin, Daniel Hunt, Daniel O’Rourke, David O’Connell, Denis Quille, Eamon Rohan, Eoin Galvin, James Canty, Michael Carmody, Mikey Kelleher, Orla Dillon, Pairic Shanahan, Rhys Quilter, Ryan Murphy, Timmy Dillon, Tomas Dillon, Sean and Darragh Murnane.
