A Tribute to Dan Shanahan
THE Crotta Hurling club was saddened to recently lose one of it’s heroes from bygone days who was also one of it’s most loyal supporters. Yes, with the death of Dan “the Nag Shanahan “from Irrebeg Lixnaw in his 91st year ,the club has lost another link with the teams of the late 40’s and early 50’s.
A talented and free scoring forward he made a huge contribution to the club’s successes and was the proud possessor of 4 County Senior Championship medals in 1945,1947,50 and 51. He also collected a minor championship medal with the Pearses (A Crotta /Lixnaw /Ballyduff combination )in 1938. After the 1951 success, like some of his colleagues his departure from the area left a huge void and this was reflected in the club’s lack of success in the following years.
Dan was born in Irrebeg in close proximity to the Lixnaw club but his loyalty to Crotta was total and never waned even in his later years. Dan carved out a very successful career for himself in the motor trade in Dublin, but he always kept in constant communication with his old colleagues in the area. Dan took a particular pride in being associated with the Crotta club and was delighted to attend county finals when the red and green brigade were involved. Sadly, in later years failing health did not allow him to make the trip.
While on visits home he loved to reminisce with Billy Stack or with Monty Mc’Elligott or other former colleagues about training in Stack’s field or the bus trips to Kilgarvan or Kenmare which often involved plenty of adventure.
With the passing of time and generations the contributions of former players is often forgotten or minimised but these were the men who gave the club such a proud history and tradition and something for upcoming generations to aspire to, No doubt the present underage groups will uphold that tradition. Dan was predeceased by his wife Kathleen (nee O’Sullivan) of the Spa.
May we offer our most heartfelt condolences to his sons John ,Tom and daughter Margaret, nephews and extended family and large circle of friends. May he rest in peace.
