NORTH KERRY TITLE FOR CROTTA U-15 HURLERS
Crotta U15 hurlers were crowned North Kerry U15 Champions on Sunday 23rd September in Abbeydorney when they recorded a nine point victory over our old rivals Lixnaw. Thanks to the Abbeydorney Club for having the pitch in excellent condition which contributed to a very good game of hurling. Crotta were the much better team all through (but for a ten minute period before half time which yielded Lixnaw 1-02) and deserved to come out on top. At full time Crotta had sixteen scores(1-15) to Lixnaw’s five scores(2-03) which gives a better indication of the way the match panned out.
Crotta settled the quicker and Brandon Conway pointed the first three frees following fouls on himself, Sean O’Donoghue and Raymond Nolan. Crotta’s backs were playing very well at this stage and were repelling everything that Lixnaw threw at them. Darragh O’Regan in goals was very assured, Darragh Ryan was dominating the square and both Dylan McElligott and especially Kieran Lyons were to the fore.
David Behan was very influential at centre back and as usual Barry Mahony was mopping up every break. Adrian Mahony was a power house at midfield and was very industrious throughout. It took Lixnaw 19 minutes to register their first score such was the dominance of the Crotta rearguard. Having said that the Lixnaw defence was very much on top as well with only centre forward Colin Browne getting the better of his marker. Colin won a lot of puck outs and shipped a fair bit of punishment but he was involved in most of Crotta’s best moves.
Following Lixnaw’s opening point they quickly followed with another point, and then a goal to leave the score at Crotta 0-06 Lixnaw 1-02. Crotta had the last two scores of the half when a point from play plus one from a free by Brandon Conway, left Crotta ahead by three points. Darragh Kennelly and Brandon Conway both had gilt edged chances for goals but failed to hit the net in that first half.
Cathal Keane replaced Darragh Kennelly at half time and again Cathal proved his value to the team with a point from play immediately after the restart. Crotta completely took over at this stage especially the midfield area where Adrian Mahony and Colin Browne were dominant. Raymond Nolan(0-02) and Jordan Conway(0-01) who had now got the measure of their markers, tacked on three more points. Lixnaw who were surviving on scraps at this stage struck for another goal following a bit of sloppy play in the Crotta full back line. Crotta heads did not drop though and again they kept the scoreboard ticking over with two frees from Brandon Conway and a lovely Raymond Nolan point from play. Cathal Keane ended the game as a contest seven minutes from time when he rifled the roof of the Lixnaw net from a tight angle as he made his way in from the left wing. A fine point from play from Brandon Conway plus a free by the same player concluded the scoring. Referee Tim Hannifin (Ardfert) who incidentally refereed the match sensibly throughout, sounded the final whistle to scenes of great joy. Full time Crotta 1-15 Lixnaw 2-03. This panel of Players has now put North Kerry U14 (2011) and U15 (2012) Championship wins back to back which augurs well for the Club. Captain David Behan accepted the Johnny Hussey Memorial shield on behalf of the Crotta Club from Mikey Leahy, Chairman of North Kerry Hurling Coiste Na nOg. David thanked the Abbeydorney GAA Club, Referee Tim Hanafin, Crotta mentors Brendan Mahony , Paul O’Donoghue, Martin Conway and Dermot Ryan and called for three cheers for Lixnaw. All players on the Panel played their part in getting the team to the Final.
The winning panel was as follows: Darragh Regan, Dylan McElligott, Darragh Ryan, Barry Mahony, Tom Quinlan, David Behan(Capt) Kieran Lyons, Adrian Mahony, Raymond Nolan (0-3), Bill Keane, Colin Browne, Sean O’Donoghue, Darragh Kennelly, Brandon Conway (0-10), Jordan Conway (0-01) Cathal Keane(1-01), Darragh Dineen, Adam O’Sullivan, Brian O’Connell, Gearoid Galvin, Dominic Nolan, Niall O’Sullivan, Jeaic McKenna, John Quilter, Darragh Stack and Darragh O’Donoghue. Tomas O’Connor is also a member of the panel but missed the game due to illness and we wish him a speedy recovery. Thanks to our Sponsors Prim’s Restaurant, Kilflynn for getting food ready for the Players at such short notice, after the game. Thanks to all the fantastic supporters who came out to cheer on the lads in Green and Red.
